PIXERA Version Numbers and Release Cycle

A PIXERA version name identifies both the version series and its release stage. The typical progression within a series is:

INTER (Intermediate) → RC (Release Candidate) → R (Release) → further R updates

The stage describes where a build sits in the release cycle. The number after the stage identifies a build within that stage.


How to Read a Version Name

Example: PIXERA 26.1 RC 5

Part Meaning
26 The year identifier: 2026.
1 The first version series associated with that year. This is not a month number.
RC The release stage: Release Candidate.
5 The build number within the RC stage of the 26.1 series.

PIXERA introduced this year-based naming scheme with 25.1 as part of its move to rolling releases. Earlier versions used names such as 2.0.x. See the PIXERA 25.1 Overview.


Release Stages

INTER — Intermediate

An Intermediate is a beta build that makes new features, improvements, and fixes available for early testing and feedback.

Intermediate builds are not fully tested. We advise against using them for production

 

RC — Release Candidate

RC stands for Release Candidate: a candidate for the upcoming release. It follows the Intermediate stage in the typical release cycle and is used to evaluate the version before release.

An RC is still a prerelease build. Further RC builds may follow as issues are addressed. PIXERA also classifies release-candidate builds as beta versions in its 

R — Release

R stands for Release. It identifies the regular release stage, following the release candidates.

Additional releases within the same series receive further R numbers, such as R 1, R 2, and R 3. These updates can contain fixes and improvements; consult the changelog for the actual changes in each build.

The repository distinguishes R builds from Intermediate and Release Candidate builds and defaults R installers to the stable distribution channel.


In Which Order Are Versions Released?

The following example illustrates the progression within one version series. The build numbers are illustrative and are not a complete publication history:

PIXERA 26.1 INTER 1
        ↓
PIXERA 26.1 INTER 2 … INTER 30
        ↓
PIXERA 26.1 RC 1
        ↓
PIXERA 26.1 RC 2 … RC 5
        ↓
PIXERA 26.1 R 1
        ↓
PIXERA 26.1 R 2 … further release updates

There is no fixed number of intermediate or RC builds implied by this naming scheme.

Why Does the Number Start Again?

Build numbers are counted separately for each version series and stage. The installer tooling proposes the next number from existing tags for that specific combination, starting at 1 when none exist.

For example, 26.1 RC 1 can follow 26.1 INTER 30. The smaller number does not mean that RC 1 belongs to an earlier release stage.


Version History

The main release series progressed in this order, through 26.1:

1.0 → 1.2 → 1.4 → 1.6 → 1.8 → 2.0 → 25.1 → 25.2 → 26.1

From 2.0 to Year-Based Version Names

After 2.0, PIXERA switched to year-based naming with 25.1, rather than continuing the main release naming with 2.2 or 3.0. In this scheme, 25 identifies 2025 and 1 identifies the first version series for that year.


What Happens When a New Version Series Starts?

A newer series has its own release stages and build numbers. Development of that series can overlap with updates to an older release series, so all PIXERA versions do not form one uninterrupted INTER → RC → R sequence.
