In this article, we will be going over how to create a simple AR setup in PIXERA.

You can download an example project going over the workflow mentioned below here.

Initial Setup

For an AR setup in PIXERA, you will need three things:

  1. Screen
  2. Unreal Project
  3. Studio Camera

For information on how to import an Unreal Project in PIXERA please look into this article: Unreal Engine PIXERA Setup

For information on how Studio Camera's work in PIXERA please look into this article: Studio Camera (Virtual Production)

Project Setup

Screens and Camera

First, you will want to bring in a Screen and a Studio Camera. On the Studio Camera, you will want to have the Foreground frustum activated. Depending on your workflow, you can then have the Background or Live Input frustums activated depending on what visual you want to have shown around the AR Unreal scene talked about below.

You will then want to attach an output to the Foreground frustum and to the Screen if using a visual on it.

Compositing

Next, you will want to bring in the Unreal Project to be used and place it onto the Timeline. From here, you will want to specify the Unreal Layer's “Screen Group Presence” to only be the “Studio Camera - Foreground” screen group.

On the Unreal Resource, you will want to activate the Custom Command Line Argument: “r.PostProcessing.PropagateAlpha=2” which will allow the Unreal scene being loaded on the Foreground to have alpha. This will allow a Live Input, Background frustum, and/or Screen media to appear behind the Unreal scene, creating an AR output.

Usage

After running the Unreal Project, you will have a functioning AR setup in PIXERA. From here, you can run the show in a variety of ways, such as:

  1. Using Tracking in Control to move the Studio Camera: Tracking Modules, Tracking Integration
  2. Interacting with the Unreal scene: PIXERA Connect, an Unreal Plugin - General Usage
  3. Combining Studio Camera and Screen visuals: Studio Camera (Virtual Production)
